My newsfeed has been flooded this week with pictures and articles of women and men marching. Now before you jump to conclusions, I am not about to tell you what my thoughts are on the Women’s March. But I do want to discuss the way we choose what is important to us. The way we decide what aspects of life are so important that we are willing to take a day off of work and march to stand up for them.

Every belief stems from something larger. That means, if I believe in freedom of speech (which allows me to write this blog), that belief doesn’t stop with me. It has to be backed by something. In this case, my belief in freedom of speech stems from the First Amendment, which is a man-made document that explains what’s right and acceptable and what’s not. Often though, the topics that really get us logging steps on our Fitbits have more to do with our moral beliefs than our legal ones.

So I challenge you today, whatever your beliefs are on equal rights, abortion, or any other main stream issue, to ponder where they come from. Do they come from the legal system, the culture, your religion, or your personal perception of right and wrong? When we think on what we believe, and question where our beliefs come from, we can grow and be challenged in new ways!
