I hear often that a lot changes when a woman becomes pregnant. Some of the changes are expected, like nausea or a growing belly, but others have more to do with the long term. Like how different their lives will look with a child as opposed to being on their own, or how plans have to change to accommodate the new arrival.

Often, I think these changes are viewed negatively. People think it’s bad when goals have to be flexible, and when the way you planned to achieve your goal changes. But in my experience, this is far from the truth! When I met my husband, we dated while he was training close by with the Marine Corps. But we quickly realized that he would be stationed in another state sooner than we thought, and I had a choice to make.

I was planning to complete my degree at an in-state university, but that would mean being separated from my, then fiancé, for over 2 years. I had many friends advise me to not let go of my dream, and go to the school I had been planning. But when I made that plan, I didn’t even know that this incredible man would be in my life to factor into the equation. Instead, I transferred to an online university, moved with my husband, and completed my degree a year early!

My point in all this, is that no matter what new factor in your life is causing you to refocus on your goals, whether it be a job, pregnancy, or marriage, being flexible is a crucial part of life. The dream come true isn’t always what you originally envisioned, but in my case, it is so much better!
