Recently, my husband came back from a 6 month deployment overseas. Military homecomings are such incredible events filled with joy, laughter, and plenty of tears. As I woke up at 4:30 AM and hopped in my car to go pick up my man, I began to think about all the other women and families who would be attending the homecoming with me.

Military Homecomings

We don’t have children yet, but I was mesmerized by one little family of three that huddled together in the cold, early morning, beaming with excitement. The mom hugged her toddler, and bundled her newborn up with blankets. And then I saw the sign. In bold letters it read, “I have waited my whole life to meet you, daddy!”

Now I have seen signs like this before, but on this particular day, it brought tears to my eyes thinking about the joy and the struggle of pregnancy in a military world. This mom looked so beautiful as she waited to see her husband, but I know it must have been hard seeing her belly swell throughout her pregnancy knowing that her husband would never experience it first hand. I’m sure that she had many lonely, sleepless nights feeding her newborn alone and missing her husband. But the culmination of all those struggles brought her to this joyous moment when she would see her husband meet his little girl for the first time!

So to every woman who has dealt with parenting, pregnancy, miscarriage, or any other huge life events while her serviceman was away, keep your head up You’re doing great, and sooner than you think, you will find yourself in a joyous moment where you remember it’s all worth it!
